Tony Beckett
Councillor Tony Becket J.P.
Very sadly during 2019 we lost Tony Becket, regarded by all as one of the genuine ‘Nice Guys’, who would help anybody, and spent many years trying to do just that.
Tony did his National Service in The RAF Police, and joined the Lancashire Police Forces for a short while later.
He helped his Father Percy Becket, better known to many ‘Barmy Mick’ who ran a stall in Nelson Market. What most people did not know was that this genial laughter maker on his stall, was a Special Forces soldier in WW2 with a number of foreign
decorations. Tony later was perhaps better known for Running Eastwoods Furniture Store on Scotland Road with his Wife Margaret, this was in fact a family business started by his Father-in-Law.
Not only was Tony a long Term Councillor, a Justice of the Peace, a past Mayor, a member of The Masons, the Rotary Club, Town Cryer, the Royal British Legion and of course later, The Armed Forces Support Group.
He will be very sadly missed by many people, in many organisations.
