H5N1 AVIAN INFLUENZA CONFIRMED AT 2ND PREMISES NEAR EASINGWOLD, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 has been confirmed at a second premises near Easingwold, Hambleton, North Yorkshire. A 3km Protection Zone and a 10km Surveillance Zone have been put in place around the premises.

In addition, in response to the increase in cases across England and new findings in wild birds, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures will come into force across all of England and Scotland from noon today (Saturday 25 January 2025).

The regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures is also being extended to include the unitary authorities of North Yorkshire and York and a new area covering Shropshire from 00:01 on Monday 27 January. The new AIPZ with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures will then cover:

  • North Yorkshire (added)
  • An area in Shropshire (added)
  • The East Riding of Yorkshire
  • The City of Kingston upon Hull
  • Lincolnshire
  • Norfolk
  • Suffolk.

All bird keepers in these areas must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.

All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow the housing and stringent biosecurity measures in addition to following any Protection/Surveillance Zone restrictions in their area to prevent future outbreaks.
